There is more than 4000 chemicals in a single puff of
tobacco
Tobacco contains 3 very harmful substances
1. Nicotine – an addictive drug found in tobacco makes you crave even more
2. Tar – a thick dark liquid that forms when tobacco
burns it coats the lining of the lungs and causes diseases
3. Carbon Monoxide – colorless, odorless, poisonous
gas produced when tobacco burns

Tobacco can be smoked, chewed, or inhaled - most
common form is cigarettes
Cigarettes are made from shredded tobacco leaves
Some have filters reduce nicotine and tar
Cigars and Pipes are shredded tobacco is also used
Cigar smoke contains 25X more CO2 and 400X
more nicotine
Smokeless Tobacco and chew are placed in the
mouth rather than smoked.
Respiratory System - Tobacco smoke damages the
aveoli in the lungs. Aveoli- tiny air sacs in the lungs
This damage leads to lung cancer & Emphysema .
(disease that results in the destruction of the aveoli in
the lungs)
Digestive System - increase risk of cavities and gum
disease
dulls taste buds
stomach ulcers
cancer – mouth, throat, stomach,
& brain
Nervous system – reduces flow of O2 to
Brain- lack of O2 can cause strokes
Excretory system – develop bladder cancer
from chemicals absorbing into
bloodstream and damaging kidneys and
bladder
Circulatory system – constricts blood
vessels and causes heart disease
The set of organs that supply your body with oxygen
and rid your body of carbon dioxide
 Parts of the system
Trachea – tube in throat that takes air to and from the
lungs. (windpipe)
Epiglottis- flap of tissue in the back of your mouth that
keeps food out of your trachea. (It covers the trachea
when you eat and uncovers when you breath)
Bronchi – two tubes that branch from the trachea – one
tube to each lung
Diaphragm – large dome-shaped muscle below the
lungs that expands and relaxes to produce breathing

The breathing process is a three step process

1. Inhaling

2. Inside the lungs

3. Exhaling

When you inhale you take air into your lungs
– then the air enters the blood stream and
replaces the carbon dioxide. When you
exhale you breathe out the carbon dioxide.
Take care of your respiratory system!

someone experiences when he or she stops
using an addictive substance
Psychological dependence – an addiction in
which a person believes that he or she needs a
drug in order to feel good or function normally

Physical dependence – an addiction
in which the body develops a
chemical need for a drug

Tolerance – the body’s need for larger
and larger doses of a drug to produce
the same effect
PEER PRESSURE
WANTING TO LOOK COOL
WANTING TO BE JUST LIKE CELEBRITIES

health.

the burning end of a cigarette, pipe, or cigar.
It contains twice as much tar and nicotine as
mainstream smoke
