1848 – out of concerns of food provided to troops in the Mexican-America War,
inspections of adulterated food and drugs set standards on exported products
like salted meats, fish and flour.
The Division of Chemistry started looking at agricultural commodities in 1867
following the first court case involving adulterated products where butter sued
oleomargarine with butter winning and oleo being taxed.
Early in the 1880’s the Ladies Health Association provided the foundation for
“pure food, drink and drug campaigns” s
Harvey W. Wiley was appointed Director of the Division of Chemistry and
formed the “Poison Squad”, having young healthy men, volunteering to ingest
food additive chemicals to determine their impact on human health.

1906 the Pure Food and Drug Act was passed and the Meat Inspection Act was
a result of the Upton Sinclair’s publication of The Jungle. President Teddy
Roosevelt when given a copy of the book, prompted inspections of the meat
slaughtering houses and passage of the Act
1938, The Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act was signed by Franklin D.
Roosevelt , spurred by the Elixir Sulfanilamide disaster where 100 people died
from elixir consumption
US Food and Drug Administration initiated a national guideline to food
inspections, 1958
1976 FDA Guideline Food Inspection tool was developed using a 44 item and
100 point program
1993 FDA Uni-Code was a Science –based Code requiring individual State
