SEN. DEBBIE STABENOW PROFILE
Sen. Debbie Stabenow
Biography
Debbie Stabenow is the Democratic senior senator from Michigan, and is the ranking Democrat on the Senate Committee
on Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry. Debbie Stabenow was born in Gladwin, Michigan and grew up in Clare, Michigan. In
1972, Stabenow graduated from the University of Michigan with a B.A. and then a Master’s in Social Work in 1975. In 1978,
Stabenow was elected to the Michigan House of Representatives. She was then elected to the Michigan Senate 1990. In
1996, Stabenow was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives and won handily. In 2000, she ran for Senate in a hotly
contested election race, just barely beating Senator Abraham 49% to 48%. In the Senate, Stabenow has promoted worker’s
assistance against trade deals and was a vocal critic of President Bush’s trade policy. In 2004, she became the Secretary of
the Democratic National Caucus, the third ranking position. Stabenow has consistently supported LGBTQ rights voting
against several attempts to ban same-sex marriage. In 2011, she became Chairman of the Senate Committee on
Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry where she led the fight to pass a controversial farm bill in 2012. The farm bill reduced
direct subsidies for farmers and passed the Senate, but stalled in the House when they called for deeper cuts to nutritional
assistance programs. A strong proponent of Michigan’s auto industry, Stabenow ‘s support was critical for steering $2billion
for the “Cash for Clunkers” program, a critical boon to the industry during the Great Recession.
