Fashion Sub-cultures

The Mods (The Modernists)
Originated in London in the late 1950’s
but popularised in 1960’s.
Working class seen as imitating middle
class
Associated with drug fuelled partying
(amphetamines)
Hang out in coffee shops where Mods
were able to play their own records.
Travelled on scooters for their
practicality
Conflicts with the Rockers who were
likened to louts.

Fashion
Adopted Italian and French styles
Sophisticated tailored made suits with narrow lapels,
thin ties, button-down collars, pointed leather shoes,
Chelsea boots, Clarks desert boot
Fish tail parka originally created for soldiers in the
Korean war
Female mods dressed androgynously with short hair,
men’s clothing, flat shoes with minimal make-up.
Ben Sherman designs often feature the Royal Air Force
Symbol which can also be identified as the Mod symbol
Boutiques on Carnaby Street
and Kings Road
Music
Music: Pop, soul, ska, British beat
music and R&B.
Mods were attracted to ska music because it
was secret, underground and had not reached
commercial channels.
