Opportunity
Future
Now
•
Long tables of summary data
over time
•
Large dataset embedded in
animated graphics
•
Long listings of individual patient
data over time
•
•
Line plots or 1 variable at a time
Many questions can be
answered in the visualization
without a new outputs
Roche Data Visualization Tool: A new software tool to create
animated graphics to visualize time series data from clinical
trial
Example 1. Neutrophil depression in a paediatric
study
Background: Drug cause depression of neutrophil count, potentially
increasing risk of infections. A better understanding of the abnormal labs
is needed.
Current output:
Table 1 Patients with a Depression in Neutrophils to
CTC Grade 3 or Worse
Example 1. Demo of Animated Graphics
Study day
Example 2. Different aspect of treatment response in
two clinical studies
Background:
Disease activity measured in composite score. Drug effect not fully
captured by the score.
DAS28 = 0.56 TJC28 + 0.28 SJC28 + 0.70 ln ESR + 0.14 GH
Current
outputs:

Recommendation from the tool designers
• Explain it well the first time
• Treat the animated graphic analysis as exploratory analysis
• Follow data sharing guideline, as the underlying data is embedded
in the .svg output files
• Use animation only when it adds value
Potential use
• Data monitoring for safety and data quality?
• Communication?
• Exploratory analysis?
• Quick review of large datasets?
