Mandatory minimum sentences and “grid sentencing”
Judges have little or no discretion in sentencing
Accomplice Liability Law
“Megan’s Law” (although not part of the war on drugs)
Substantial assistance
conspiracy laws
asset forfeiture laws
Police strictly enforce the law and use less discretion
Prison experience is more PUNITIVE and less CORRECTIVE
Parole is impossible to achieve in FEDERAL cases
85% rule – non-violent offenders must spend 85% of sentence
Elimination of work credit, time served and “good time” credit
“3 strikes and you’re out” law
Capital offenses include more than just homicide (like drug
kingpins).
Most of these “solutions” are connected solely with the “war on
drugs”
