Border Incident
• Turkey is under increasing pressure from
Europe and the U.S. to curtail drug trafficking
• The border post at Svilengrad files following
report at 2337
– A black Mercedes carrying three passengers
crashed through the barrier at the border
– In hot pursuit were three official, “police type”
Turkish vehicles
– All four vehicles ignored warning shots by
Bulgarian border guards
– They proceeded at high speed into Bulgaria

• The Turkish vehicles caught the Mercedes at
a farm house in the village of Ljubimec
– A firefight ensued
– Three persons were killed
» One of dead is a Bulgarian farmer
• Alerted by the border guards, local Bulgarain
police arrived at the farmhouse and arrested
five individuals
– One of the Bulgarian policemen was wounded
– It is unclear who shot him

• Four of the prisoners claim to be Turkish drug
enforcement officials
– They alleged that the 5th prisoner was one of
three drug traffickers fleeing from arrest in the
Mercedes
» The other two were apparently killed in the
firefight at the farm house
• The police advise that a television news crew
has arrived at the scene
