Objectives and background: Sleep disorders are commonly underdiagnosed and are
significant source of concern in the geriatric population. The aim of this study is to
estimate the burden of sleep disorders in the elderly population in a rural area of
Central Greece.
Materials and methods: In November 2014 the Greek version of the Pittsburgh Sleep
Quality Index (PSQI) questionnaire was handed over by the research team in 191
persons over 65 years of age from city of Farsala (Central Greece). The prevalence of
sleep disorders was investigated using the PSQI, and additional information regarding
age, gender, height, weight, and medical history were also collected during an
interview. Morbidity was divided 11 subcategories, while medical treatment was also
categorized into 15 drug groups.
Results:
•114 women (59.69%) and 77 men (40.31%) with mean age
69.4±4.3 years and average BMI 27.2±5.7 were examined.
•Poor sleep quality was found in 111 persons (58.1%), 76
women and 31 men. The incidence was 66.7% in the female
population and 40.3% among men.
•Hypertension was found in 68.5%, dyslipidemia in 38.7%,
coronary artery disease in 30.9%, diabetes mellitus in 13.1%,
COPD in 12.6%.
•The most common class of drugs are diuretics (28.3%), ACEI
(25.6%) and statins (21.1%).
Conclusion: The morbidity pattern of the
elderly population of the area under study does
not differ from the expected one, according to
bibliography. Sleep disorders are very common
in the elderly, and our results are in agreement
with previous reports.
