million people in 2005
Globally, HIV/AIDS reached its
highest level in history, an
estimated 40.3 million people
It remains the leading cause of
death worldwide for people
between the ages of 15 and 49
Sub-Saharan Africa
In Sub-Saharan Africa, 25.8 million
people have HIV/AIDS
95% of those with the virus do not
know they have it
South Africa has the highest number
of people (5,300,000) with HIV/AIDS
Swaziland has the highest adult
prevalence rate in the world, 38.8%
DREAM:
Drug Resource Enhancement
against AIDS and Malnutrition
The Community of Sant’Egidio
designed DREAM
It began a pilot project in
Mozambique in March 2002
Dream’s special focus is to prevent the
transmission of HIV/AIDS from a
pregnant woman to her new-born child
The method used is highly active
anti-retroviral therapy (HAART)
DREAM has been creative in inventing
means for keeping the adherencerate of participants high
DREAM provides for food distribution
to mothers and their families
DREAM works in partnership with
the host nations and focuses on
capacity-building within local
communities

Mozambique
