• By the end of the lesson you will be able to:
• Describe lifestyle factors that have an effect on health including:
– Physical activity - Recommendations and guidelines, health benefits,
psychological benefits
– Alcohol consumption - Recommendations and guidelines, risks
associated with excessive drinking
– Smoking - Health risks
– Stress - Health risks of excessive stress levels
– Diet - Benefits of a healthy diet, effects of poor nutrition,
recommendations and guidelines, balance of good health
• By the end of the lesson you may be able to:

affect sports training and performance.

Task
TASG
• In your groups research your lifestyle
factor and link the diseases linked to it
STRESS
• May occur if the performer thinks that they can’t meet the demands
of the activity
• Can be both positive or negative. Positive can help the performer
do well whereas negative stress can cause them to under perform.
• In your groups can you think of an example?
DIET
• Eating well improves sports performance.
• Eating well is specific to you as not all diets suit everyone.
• Your diet must meet the demands of the sport.
• In your groups can you think of an example?
ALCOHOL AND SMOKING
ALCOHOL
• Slows down reaction time
• Affects the bodies ability to turn
food into energy
• Slows down your brain
processing Information
• Affects your balance and
Coordination and accuracy
• Can cause dehydration
SMOKING
Lungs work less effectively
Tobacco produces carbon
monoxide which prevents
the blood from picking up
oxygen
Chemicals affect your blood
circulation
Less energy as blood vessels
become smaller so carry less
oxygen
Healthy Lungs
• You can see how the
lung looks without the
effects of inhalation of
smoke.
• Note black specks
throughout indicative
of carbon deposits
from pollution.
Lung after smoking
• Smokers lung with
cancer. White area
on top is the cancer,
this is what killed the
person. The
blackened area is just
the deposit of tars
that all smokers paint
into their lungs with
every puff they take.
SLEEP
• Too much or too little can cause a decline in the performance of the
brain.
• Can affect concentration, flexibility, decision making and information
processing.
• Should have at least 8 hours sleep each night.
• It is important for the body to rest and recuperate.
• Sleep stimulates the realise of growth hormones, this helps cell
growth.
• Sleep deprivation can lead to stress therefore effects performance
and tissue repair and growth.
DRUGS
• All drugs have side effects and can reduce fitness levels and be
harmful to health.
• Sports performers and athletes regularly undergo testing for illegal
substances.
• The National Governing Body of sport and UK Sport are responsible
for making decisions about who gets tested and when.
• Drug abuse can lead to death.
• Some medicines are banned in some sports but not in others.
Athletes need to be careful what they take as cold and flu remedies
for some sports are banned.
• Depending on their sport athletes who suffer from asthma or
diabetes will need permission to take their medicine to ensure they
are not breaking any rules.
TASK
TASG
• In your groups can you research 4
different types of drugs and present your
answers back to the class.
DRUGS
Drugs can be classified into three groups:• Socially acceptable:
cigarettes and alcohol
• Socially unacceptable: cannabis, ecstasy
• Performance enhancing: anabolic steroids, stimulants and narcotic analgesics
Drug
Effect
Example of
abuse
Side effects
Anabolic
steroids
Increase power by building up
muscle. Increases aggression and
competitiveness. Increase training
time. Helps repair the body after
training
Power events
Weigh lifting
Sprinting events
Liver disease, Infertility
Skin disorders
Forms of cancer
Fluid retention
Beta
Blockers
Steady nerves and improves fine
motor control
Shooting
Darts
Snooker
Tiredness, lethargy
Breathing difficulties
Low blood pressure
Diuretics
Reduces body weight
Horse racing
Boxing
Dehydration, muscle cramps,
kidney failure
Stimulants
Improves endurance. Makes the
performer more physically alert.
Reduces fatigue
Endurance based
sports
Increased blood pressure,
anxiety, shaking, sweating.
Paranoia, restlessness.
Heart palpitations
Coronary Artery Disease
• Coronary artery disease is one of the most
common and serious effects of aging. Fatty
deposits build up in blood vessel walls and
narrow the passageway for the movement of
blood. The resulting condition, called
atherosclerosis often leads to eventual blockage
of the coronary arteries and a “heart attack”.
High blood cholesterol
High blood pressure
Smoking
Obesity
Lack of physical activity
Risk Factors
Uncontrollable
• Sex
• Hereditary
• Race
• Age
Controllable
• High blood pressure
• High blood
