Research Uptake: Wellcome Trust
maximising the impact of the research we fund
• to maximise the impact of the research we fund
• to explore new ideas that enable the Wellcome Trust to support
our funded researchers, and work with other stakeholders, to
maximise the uptake of research evidence into policy and practice
• to make research uptake an integral part of the work of the Trust
and our currently funded researchers as well as new grants
awarded
• to reflect , in a responsive way, the changing context and external
debates (i.e. systematic reviews) that influence this agenda
• to achieve a clearer statement for grant holders on our approach
and the support available – reflecting the Trust’s role as an
enabler while promoting creativity amongst our grant holders.
Research Uptake: Wellcome Trust
what is already happening
• Trust-funded researchers successfully engaging policy makers/practitioners
(although largely without direct support from the Trust) eg. WHO malaria
drug policy
• Some small scale funding (Alliance for Health Policy and Systems Research
initiative & PhD policy internship schemes)
• Previous work (2007 and 2013 reports) to map landscape and identify
opportunities and barriers
• Web page outlining our approach to increasing research uptake and links to
recent examples of tools and website produced by other organisations:
www.wellcome.ac.uk/ under Managing a Grant, Getting research into policy
• Initial survey of grant holders seeking views at grant holders’ meetings
• Ongoing discussions with other organisations (e.g. UKCDS, DFID) –
possible collaborations, workshops and meetings
• Possible Wellcome Trust meeting on use of research data/evidence in policy
Research Uptake: Wellcome Trust
next steps
• To achieve this we need to :
• define the Trust’s role:
• work closely with external partners
• support effective and collaborative working across the Trust
