using the ‘why’ model of analysis.

the judges more effectively than the other teams that
your view is correct.

Summary
•To be an effective debater, you don’t just need good
ideas and concepts to talk about – you need to be able
to explain them in a relevant and convincing manner.
•Good ‘analysis’ of a point is essentially giving as many
reasons as possible why something is a) true and b)
important with as much justification as possible.
•At no point should your judge ever ask themselves
‘why is that true/important/relevant?’ – so you should
ask yourself these things before and during your
speech to ensure your point is explained well.
•The aim of analysis is to minimise assertion, and
maximise reasoning.
•You start off with a small assertion, and build a logical
path to your final conclusion – with little jumps of
reasoning.
•Judges don’t hold pre-determined opinions – they
make their judgement purely on who provides the most
reasoning, so don’t assume that your assertion will be
accepted without reasoning.
