Transformation: IARC is Closing
 Currently and for the last 40 years, the Intake
Assessment and Referral Center (IARC) has
been the substance abuse screening and
referral center in Genesee County
 IARC’s Board of Directors decided to dissolve
the organization effective June 30th, 2011
 Effective July 1, GCCMH will assume this
screening and referral function through
integration into our Access Center

Genesee County CMH Access
Center Will Become Integrated
 GCCMH has been operating an Access Center
for adults and children with developmental
disabilities, adults with serious mental illness
and children with serious emotional
disturbance for years
 Estimates are that at least 50% of individuals
seeking services have co-occurring mental
and substance use disorders

Single Phone Number
 There will be a Single Number for Mental Health
and Substance Abuse Access
 The number for screening and referral for Mental
Health and Substance Abuse Services will be:
(810)257-3740
 This is also our after hours crisis services number
 IARC’s number, (810) 235-9555, will ring in the
GCCMH Access Center after 7/1/11, for a while
 Those that choose to be seen face-to-face can
walk-in and continue be screened in person

Additional Safety Net
Information: CIRT
GCCMH developed and funds:
Crisis Intervention Recovery Team (CIRT)
Mobile, face-to-face team to assist in diffusing mental
health, substance abuse and/or family crises and in
accessing medically necessary services and supports
Community providers, agencies & safety net partners
can call CIRT 24/7 at (810) 496-4935. This number is
for use by community agencies only. Please: this
contact info should not be given to individuals
seeking service. They can call (810)257-3740 - 24/7.

Outpatient Services
 Individuals seeking outpatient services will
call to register in our system, then go
straight to the provider of their choice
 Individuals seeking residential and subacute detoxification services will be
screened by Access staff on the phone
 Individuals seeking medication assisted
treatment – Methadone & our Block Grant
Suboxone Pilot – will be screened in person

Available Addiction Services
 There are many licensed providers of substance
use disorder services in Genesee County
 They provide an array of services including:
 Sub-acute detoxification
 Residential
 Recovery housing
 Intensive outpatient/Day-treatment
 Outpatient
 Methadone maintenance
For adults and adolescents, for women who are
pregnant or have minor children with them

Additional Provider Information
 Many above listed providers also accept private
insurance along with having contracts with GCCMH for
public funds e.g. Medicaid & federal block grant
 There are many other licensed, non-publicly funded
substance abuse agencies and individual clinicians that
accept insurance or private payments, e.g. Auburn
Counseling, hospital system clinics
 Have insured patients contact their benefits manager of
their employer’s human resource department or
employee assistance program
 GCCMH Access Center will also verify insurance

Sobering Facility
 The “Sober House” at New Paths, Inc., 765 E.
Hamilton, Ave., Flint, (810) 233-5340 X-149
23 hour monitored service is a safe drug and
alcohol-free place to sober up or come down
from alcohol or drugs with peer support
Individuals can be taken there by family,
police, etc. or transported by New Paths staff
from hospital EDs, although ED clearance is
no longer a required part of admission criteria

Prevention Services
 Services that reduce the risk of individuals
developing problems that could require
entry into the treatment system
 Parenting Classes, Anger
Management/Conflict Resolution Classes,
Life Skills Classes, Family Programs
 Services for all age groups can be conducted
throughout Genesee County
 Current providers: Catholic Charities and
Hope Network/Connexion

Your Important Role,
Use the C’s
 Communicate with your patients if alcohol,
Rx or other drug misuse or dependence is
suspected. Try not to personalize, cut off, etc.
 Use “Carefrontation” and refer as needed
 Coordinate Care with other professionals –
contact them as needed, ask patients how
counseling or support group meetings are
going, get progress reports, etc.
