Basic Emergency Steps
1. Recognize emergency: unusual sounds, sights, odors,
appearances or behavior
2. Decide to act or not to act:
– Presence of other people
– Uncertainty about victim
– Type of injury or illness
– Fear of catching a disease
– Fear of doing something wrong
3. Call 911
4. Provide care until paramedics arrive
Special Concerns
1. Transmission of HIV/AIDS through
body fluids (blood)
2. Fear of being sued. Good Samaritan
Law protects you.
Emergency Action Steps
1. Check the scene
–
Safe for you and others? What happened? How
many victims? Can others help?
– Unsafe situations – violence, traffic, chemicals,
fumes, electricity, fire, smoke and falling debris
– Don’t move the victim unless there is immediate
danger
2. Check the victim

Check for consciousness (“are you okay?”)
Check breathing. Open airway.
Check pulse
Check for severe bleeding
Check other conditions (chest pain, vomiting
blood, seizures, poisoning, slurred speech, broken
bones, injuries to head/neck/spine)
– Call 911
– Care for the victim until paramedics arrive
