WHAT IS SOCIOLOGY?
Sociology is the study of human social behavior and its origins, development,
organizations, and institutions. It is a social science which uses various methods of
empirical investigation and critical analysis to develop a body of knowledge about
human social actions, social structure and functions.
JOBS FOR A SOCIOLOGY MAJOR
Substance Abuse Counselor
•Counsels and aids individuals and their families that are dealing with substance
abuse problems
JOBS FOR A SOCIOLOGY MAJOR
Youth Service Provider
• Organizes and provides services for the youth of a community
• Areas usually include:
-after school programs
-counseling
-vocational training
-volunteer projects
-sports
-recreation
-helping ethnic minorities

Probation/Parole Officer
•Councils juvenile or adult offenders
•Formulate a rehabilitation plan with input from the offender, legal representatives,
family & other concerned persons
•Evaluate offender’s progress by making visits at their client’s home, school or work

Criminal Justice Counselor
•Work as a part of a community renewal team focused on issues such as reducing
drug activity and ensuring safe housing
•Help plan & direct juvenile and adult crime prevention projects
•Counselors work with offenders to maintain their safety, & the safety of their families

Recreational Therapist
•Include sports, arts & other games to assist patients in developing interpersonal
relationships & confidence in social settings
•Plans, organizes & directs recreation programs adapted to the needs of patients in
hospitals, nursing homes & other institutions
