What is the Internet of Things?
How Smart, Connected Products Are Transforming Competition
•
•
Harvard Business Review, November 2014, Michael Porter and James
Heppelmann argue that,
“because products will be linked in real time to the manufacturer’s
operations, to other products, and to third party service providers, “IoT may
change the power of rivals, substitutes, new entrants, suppliers and buyers
in existing industries.” According to them there will be “a potentially dramatic
transition of power to data analytics intermediaries that will conduct “datafacturing.””
Intelligent Object and Circular Economy
•
“I think the message to the IoT community is the key – as with adoption of
ICT, the adoption of circular principles will be done by each sector in its own
way, but it is the IoT industry that spans the entire value chain and can
therefore make a systemic contribution. So if the IoT community starts to
design for a circular economy, rather than the old “linear” economy, then it
can be a game-changer for all the industries involved, I believe! “
•
- Monika Schroeder. The European Commission published a new EU Circular Economy Package in December
2015.

IoT In Italy as it is happening Now
Council is a loose group of IoT experts. For this section I have
received input from Davide Carboni (IoT Data Scientist &
Blockchain technologist, CRS4, Intel), Raffaele Giaffreda,
(Raffaele is a research scientist currently focusing on Future
Internet enabling technologies and the Internet of Things,
CREATE-NET), Giulio Coraggio LL.M (QMUL) Partner Head of the Italian Technology Sector and Gaming Group
Avvocato (Italy), DLA Piper and Angela Tumino, co-director of
the Observatory on the Internet of Things and researcher of the
RFId Solution Center of Politecnico di Milano.

of course, Arduino and his father Massimo Banzi. It is where
the IoT really started to become a reality and a massive
inspiration for all. Consider that even Intel kneeled down to
produce an Arduino compatible breakout board to sell its chips
to makers.

IoT startups in Italy – a societal-based snapshot From
Raffaele Giaffreda Chief IoT Scientist (CREATE-NET)
1. Gli italiani sono “pantofolari” (Italians love the
comfort of their homes)
– smart-home (23% *)
2. Per gli italiani conta molto la “bella figura”
(Italians love looking good, attention to fashion
and fitness / health)
– wearables and smart health (17% *)
3. Agli italiani piace il “mangiar bene” (Italians are
very peculiar about good food)
– smart agriculture (10% *)

BUT LOSING COMPETITIVENESS…
SMEs centered industrial
fabric
• international competitiveness particularly low for Italian SMEs: high
domestic market focus, high potential, yet low score for on the “Industrial
IoT” side why?
 Micro SMEs figures – family run biz
 cultural: Italians can be very opinionated about the way things should be
done in their domain of competence
 resistance to innovation
• recent “Industria 4.0” announcement, aiming to close the competitiveness
gap compared to Germany, UK, France…
• digitalisation agenda pushed with (hopefully) real incentives / investments
Massimo Banzi:
• “We have about 440K manufacturing companies (a LOT of them
very small) compared to about 200K in germany. this means that the
way Industrial IOT will be implemented is probably different from
USA and Germany.
• Italy has good universities and some good skills available , a lot of
unfulfilled potential also because the VC market is still immature and
players are small/inexperienced.”
Alex D’Elia: DAJIE
•
“More and more people produce and consume their own energy - the so called Prosumers - and
we are quickly moving to a decentralized energy model. Moreover, the sharing economy that is
already disrupting consolidated industries will soon enter in the energy field also thanks to a huge
number of connected IoT devices that will exchange energy and data.

We believe that this world is far from being the best world possible. We respond to this by
providing activists, groups and collectives with platforms for a freer communication and digital
tools for privacy self-defence.

The "Fablabs" and Maker Movement I think they are already represented by Riccardo Luna “

Outlook positive…but it all depends on
how efficiently these plans will be
implemented…, end of Raffaele
GiafFreda’s presentation
So How can they be implemented?
What leadership is necessary?
Risorgimento 4.0
Italian unification (Italian: Unificazione italiana), or the Risorgimento ([risordʒiˈmento],
meaning the Resurgence or revival), was the political and social movement that
consolidated different states of the Italian peninsula into the single state of the Kingdom
of Italy in the 19th century.
Italy recorded a Government Debt to GDP of 132.70 percent of the country's Gross
Domestic Product in 2015. Government Debt to GDP in Italy averaged 109.51 percent
from 1988 until 2015, reaching an all time high of 132.70 percent in 2015 and a record
low of 90.50 percent in 1988.
Government Debt to GDP in Italy is reported by the Eurostat. According to Havoscope
the Black Market Value of Italy is around $111.05 Billion, while the Average Country Black
Market is $21.16 Billion. Five times the average. source
Let us now take a step back
and look at the situation
we are in
The book and the library – 450 years
TCP/IP (Internet), WWW (HTML) 50 and 23 (1993)
IoT: all objects, all parts of any whole
We are in a new ontology:
Always object+subject+third party
This means all actors are changing. There is no more public, no more citizen, no more
government, no more industry. This will become visible in under a decade.
We need a new definition of politics, away from the political party system towards a
pragmatic cybernetics.
If data is the new oil and
gold, where is it?
Out of reach of national and regional entities that still
claim agency over citizens based on a passport.
In the hands of Silicon Valley OTT.
If you do not host the data of the machines, the people
and the processes these actors will at some point stop
paying you, whether in services or taxes.
We are thus facing the highest form of societal
implosion within 5 to 10 years.
US/EU Intel top Rome 2012: total breakdown of society
because of the inevitability of the state to deal with the
digital.

Prime Minister of Luxembourg and Minister for Culture, Media andCommunications, Xavier Bettel made a special announcement
on November23rd: the launch of the Infrachain initiative. The Digital Lëtzebuergteam and the project lead have signed a
memorandum of understandingbetween 5 public and private partners to begin work immediately on anational blockchain
infrastructure project.”
•
In order to work with smart contracts, we need a blockchain, and alsoan environment that you can trust" stated Xavier Bettel.
Thisindustry-led initiative should enable all sectors, not only thefinancial sector, to take advantage of blockchain technology
byproviding a trusted and compliant infrastructure, and lowering entrybarriers for small and big companies who want to develop
services on topof it."Infrachain will strive to build a governance structure and work on thelegal uncertainties limiting the use of
blockchain technology today, while staying completely open to new technology and new actors" addedthe Prime Minister.
Blockchain is still a young technology, but thejoint efforts of the government and major actors will provide realadded-value for the
ecosystem. "While everybody is talking aboutblockchain, we want to act" concluded Mr. Bettel. (source)

Our current situation of fast removal of value in foreign (Siilicon Valley hands) is nothing but war.
In war friends become enemies and strategically one has to ask: Who is the real enemy and who
is the Absolute enemy? (with Carl Schmitt).
The Absolure Enemy is the full crash not of a system but of society itself. In such times all actors
should sit together and negotiate courses of action. In this case the white, grey and black
economy have to put their assets together for a new political pragmatic cybernetic system, a new
public cause and a new entrepreneurail spirit.
The transparency in #IoT and its creative destruction of ’money’ should lead to new value
models based on current assets before it is too late and they disappear either in the fabric of the
digital transition or in foreign hands.

a service (Kiti Gjerstad), you need all
the capabilities to build the set of
services for that
In such a system ’drama’ like the
referendum of next Sunday would never
even be conceivable.
Infrastructure and value should not be
governed on a daily basis.
