• Costa Rica and China started their
diplomatic relations in 2007
• Costa Rica is the first Central American
country to have relations with China.

The FTA between China and Costa Rica was signed in
April 2010.
Free Trade Agreement between Costa Rica and
China
In brief, the negotiation of
the Treaty started in January
2009 and after 6 negotiation
rounds it was signed on
April 8th, 2010.
The Treaty entered into force on August 1st.
The Free Trade Agreement
• Costa Rica exports to China : computer parts,
controllers and processors, leather goods
among 141 different products
• China to CR: main product iron or steel
products; the second product is shoes and
third black beans. Total products exported to
Costa Rica in 2008 were 3.417
• -For Costa Rican exports 99,6% will have preferential treatment.
Products such as: frozen orange juice, tilapia, shrimp, flowers,
plants, cocoa, yucca, paint, chocolates, palm heart, rum and
leather goods.
• -For China as to their rules and regulations, 57% of imports
won’t pay tax or so called duties in products such as meat, fish,
chicken eggs, frozen calamari, garlic, eggplant, huts, pears,
apples, oats, soya beans, textile goods, musical instruments
and shoes.

- Purchasing of raw materials to increase
competitiveness.
- Exploitation of niche high-growth consumption.
- Linkage to dynamic productive activities in
China (local consumption + export)
- Supporting the implementation of the FTA
