GIS and RSS


Geographical information system:- Any information system capable of integrating, storing,
editing, analyzing, sharing, and displaying geographically reference information.
RSS is a family of Web feed formats used to publish frequently updated content such as blog
entries, news headlines, and pod casts in a standardized format
Introduction




Geographically mapping of data feeds from various site, on 3D virtual
worlds (Second life).
Role of mirror worlds.
Why feeds?
How can this be achieve?
How can this be achieve?



This requires a Standard framework
Metaverse 1.0 proposes the need for a standardized framework that supports
interoperability between virtual worlds and mirror worlds.( and real worlds).
Metaverse proposes four technologies.
–
–
–
–

Mirror worlds
Virtual Worlds
Life logging
Augmented reality
The major focus of this paper is on Mirror worlds and virtual worlds.
Use of RSS and Google Earth in displaying geographical
datasets




Role of RSS (Really Simple Syndication)
Network link facility
Earlier network link layers are static, data hand crafted.
Going to more generic data sources
Requirements to represent feeds on Google earth
–
–
–
RSS feed capture
Parsing the feeds for Geographical information.
Generating the KML (Keyhole Markup Language) file
NewsGlobe in operation



When the feed is activated, Google Earth calls the NewsGlobe web URL and parameters.
News-Globe then makes its own HTTP GET request to the
target feed URL, receives the RSS file, parses it and builds
the KML file, and returns this file to Google Earth
Unless otherwise specified, simple Google Earth markers
are used.
From mirror worlds to virtual worlds
LLHTTPRequest functionality
- Gave opportunity for business tools
 Challenges
- Inbuilt LSL scripting very basic
- Memory limitations (max 32kb, data)
- Lack of shared libraries
- Limit of 2kb on data returned by

LLHTTPReq
Data globe in secondlife






Advantages like 3D interface, rotate and zoom, morph to 2D
map.
Since similar to NewsGlobe code is reused.
Can take KML feed (Adv of geocoded data)
Memory restrictions, pipe delimited text file with one line per
record
Interesting voice interface
Images displayed on nearby screen
Mapping opportunities
1.
Mapping names to location & images to location.
2. Second life to web mapping
3. Intelligent weather mapping
Geo globe


From 720 degree bubble photo to VR room
(sphere)
Same news globe engine but change in final
user interface
Realtime data




Moving away from “pin-on-a-map” metaphor
fboweb.com has the feed of all the radar
tracks of aircrafts around the USA (delay)
Feed used is KMZ feed (Zipped KML)
Limitation of map size (max 10m*10m).
Airplane tracking demo in second life
Why virtual worlds?





Single world, many uses
Human behavior modeling
Instant sharing
3D simulation and real time multi user
applications
A unique experience
3D modeling in mirror and virtual world




Import 3D models from Googles 3D warehouse
Can use the models in google earth
Google SketchUp (helps building 3D models)
Lack of extensive library for virtual world
Second life + Google earth





A combination of these two resulting into a digital environmentthe metaverse or 3D internet.
3D internet will be one of the top five innovations in the coming
years.
The line between real world and virtual world is diminishing.
How do we organize vast data?
Reality mining
Privacy Issues

Complete view of people’s home, backyards etc.

Layered 3D wikipedia

Easy to link home, work and leisure.
Accessibility issue for disabled people



Virtual worlds are sensory environments i.e. they depend of the
person’s ability to see, hear and speak.
Researchers are working on new ways to help disabled people
to communicate in virtual worlds
– Speech to sign language.
– 3-D navigation mouse.
– Specialized training and support.
Location-aware mobile device interfaces
Conclusion

Democratization of GIS- not limited to big companies.
With the advent of Web2.0, people with little programming experience
can create good visualization from various data source with much
ease.
In future mirror worlds, virtual worlds, life logging and augmented
reality will combine to form a single entity.
