Government Types
 Republic: People elect all major party officials and
these officials are then in charge of people.

Head is usually a Prime Minister or a President
 Federal Republic: A federal republic is a federation
of states with a republican form of government. A
federation is the central government. The states in a
federation also maintain all political sovereignty that
they do not yield to the federation.
Autocracy
 Auto = one/self
 Oldest form of government: one person in control
 Gained power from inheritance or through military
power
 Totalitarian dictatorships: aim to control aspects of
people’s lives.
Monarchy
 A monarchy has a king, queen, emperor or empress.
 The ruling position can be passed on to the ruler’s heirs…
also known as heretic (inherited)
 In some traditional (ABSOLUTE) monarchies, the
monarch has absolute power.
 A constitutional monarchy, like the UK, also has a
democratic gov. that limits the monarch’s control. A
PRIME MINISTER leads but has a parliament help
govern. (King & Queen are symbolic figures.
 Parliamentary monarchy- elected parliament has control,
but King/Queen are symbolic but do help elect the
parliament.
Oligarchy
 A government in which a few people such a
dominant clan or clique have power.
 Ex: Taliban
Communism/Socialism
 Government controls society
 Socialism: less control, provides basic services,
welfare state
 Government decides what to produce, how much to
produce and how to distribute what is produced.
 Business/people cannot innovate/create and because
customers have no choices these economies are
“stagnate”

Infrastructure
 Underlying framework, system of public works of a
country, state and local government.


Examples: Roads, hospitals, schools, police and fire
departments, sewage and water treatment, electricity, food
supply, gasoline supply, trash disposal, house
What is the role of governments in infrastructure
Developing v. Developed Countries
 Developled Countries: have a solid infrastructure
 Developing Countries: lack infrastructure and have
lower GDP’s

Why can’t we just loan them more $$ to develop their
infrastructure??
