• The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland,
is commonly known as the United Kingdom, the UK, or
Britain.
• The United Kingdom consists of 4 countries: England,
Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales.
• The United Kingdom is participating in the G-20 Summit to
review progress made since the Washington and London
Summits, to address the global economy and financial
crisis, and to also address energy and environmental issues.
• The countries that make up the United Kingdom
are located between Ireland and France.
• The United Kingdom's population is 51.44 million people.
• The average fertility rate in the United Kingdom is 2
children per woman or family. The UK's birth rate is
increasing.
• The United Kingdom is a constitutional monarchy and is
governed by a parliamentary system. The seat of
government is located in London, England.
• England's current queen is Queen Elizabeth II.
• The United Kingdom's economy is the 6th largest economy
in the world and is the third largest in Europe.
• Its GDP (as of 2008) is $2.226 trillion dollars, ranked 8th in
the world.
• The UK is now known for financial services, especially
banking and insurance. London is the world's largest
financial center and is a major center for international
business and commerce.
• London is the leader of the 3 "command centers" for the
global economy, along with New York City and Tokyo.
• Tourism is also very important to the British economy.
• The United Kingdom's currency is the pound sterling (also
known as the British pound).
• 1 British Pound= 1.62 U.S. dollars, 1.10 Euros.
• The United Kingdom's military consists of the Army, the
Royal Navy (which includes the Royal Marines) and the
Royal Air Force. Man power fit for military service: males
16-49 years of age: 14,729,500. Females 16-49 years of
age: 14,125,600.
• The United Kingdom is considered politically stable.
• Prime Minister James Gordon Brown will be representing
the United Kingdom at the G-20 Summit.
• Prime Minister James Gordon Brown is both a political and
economic leader.
• The United Kingdom is looking to review the progress made
since the Washington and London Summits, discuss key
issues regarding the global economy, financial crisis. Ways
to deal with the UK's rising unemployment rate.
• The G-20 representatives will discuss and address key
issues pertaining to the global economy, energy and the
environment.
• Representatives will review progress regarding the Global
Plan for Recovery and Return discussed at the G-20 Summit
in London.
• The United Kingdom has been successful in improving its
economy. Prime Minister James Gordon Brown can share
these new measures of how to stimulate the economy. For
example, the part-nationalizing of the banking system and
means of cutting taxes.
• Since the United Kingdom is known for financial services
and London is a major center for international business and
commerce, discuss possible ideas to further address the
global economy and the financial crisis, and measures to
promote global recovery.
