Cartagena is an
ancient city,
located in the
south-east of
Spain
S. III B.C. Hasdrubal Barca founds Quart Hadast as a commercial site
and capital of the new Carthaginian expansion in the Iberian Peninsula
209 B.C. Publius Cornelius Scipio arrives at the Carthaginian bastion,
conquering it for Rome. It will be called Cartago Nova and its capture will be
key in taking possession of the rest of Hispania.
S. VI A.D. It temporarilly becomes the capital of the Byzantine Empire in
Hispania, being named Cartago Spartaria.
After the Muslim arrival and their conquest, it will become a Muslim city with
a mosque, integrated in the Tudmir cora, changing its name to Medina de
Qartyanna al-Halfa.
S. XIII, XIV and XV It was reconquered and christianized, being
characterized by its small population due to the epidemics caused by the
many diseases coming from the dry lagoon. Most of its population will travel
north, settling in the area of Murcia, still in the process of being founded.
