Bases de données en spectroscopie stellaire.
Paris. Sep. 2003
The origins
 Target selection in the COROT mission is a critical
issue (staying six months observing a binary star
would have been very depressing).
Theoretical pulsation models requires a precise
knowledge of the stellar physical parameters (Teff,
log g, metallicity)
 An ambitious ground-based observing programme
(more than 1500 objects, mainly spectroscopy and
photometry) was initiated.
 Having an user-friendly access system to these
data was considered as of fundamental importance
since the beginning of the project.
 March 2001: LAEFF - COROT agreement to develop
GAUDI.

Archives: are they necessary?
 Efficiency: The collective impact of the archive
will far exceed what could be produced by the
programs of single observer or team of observers.
 Astronomers might find that the observations
they wanted had already been made, and that it
was simply a matter of retrieving the relevant
information.
 One set of observations can serve many
different scientific purposes, including some not
considered when the observations were made.
 Exploit the time domain.
 Periodic phenomena: Variable stars
 Transient phenomena: SN, NEO, GRB,..

The need of Archives (II)
 Legacy: Guarantee that the valuable datasets are
usable by future generations for research and
education.
 Positive “Globalization”: Astronomers from
countries with limited resources have the
opportunity of accessing high-quality data.
“A well-designed and properly implemented
archive is a major contribution toward the
full exploitation from the expensive-to-obtain
observational data”.

Data Management
 Data stored in the archive are indexed in an
inventory management subsystem (RDBMS).
 To ensure integrity, metadata will be extracted
from FITS keywords and ingested the database
in an automatic way.
Data Storage
 Data will resided on a mass storage system
(magnetic disks) in FITS format.
 Data integrity requires a well-defined backup
policy and data safekeeping.

Data Retrieval and User Interface System
 The friendliness of the user interface is
extremely important for the archive to be
effectively used by the community at large.
 The UI will be HTML-based to allow simple
use through the Web.
 The system should be easy for new users to
learn.

GAUDI. The Help Systems
 Different levels of help to users
 On-line Access to project documentation:
A detailed description of the project, the
archive and access system shall be given
on-line and stored in a format allowing an
easy browsing (e.g. PDF).
 On-line help: Help on a specific keyword
can be obtained by simply clicking on it.
 HelpDesk: to channel questions and to
provide continuous support to users of the
Archive.

Analysis tools
“A modern multi-wavelength data server must
not be a simply data repository. It must include
tools to help the users in the data analysis”
 Multi-range spectroscopy: building of SEDs
 Comparison to models or theoretical data
