A Short History of Venezuela
• Colonized by the Spanish in the 18th century. Became known
as Gran Colombia.
• Simon Bolivar’s efforts lead to the collapse of Gran Colombia
in 1830.
• Venezuela gained independence from Spain July 5th 1811.
• Oil was discovered and Western oil companies began playing
a major roll, in politics and infrastructure development.
• County ruled by generally benevolent military strong men
until 1959.
• Democratically elected governments have held power until
the present.
• Hugo Chaves is elected President in1998, and things begin to
change.
