Future of Globalization in India
*INCREDIBLE INDIA*
• India-diverse & complex country
• Subject matter for political
mobilizations
• Failure in respecting indigenous
culture
• Reasons for development
• Major reason for Development--“GLOBALIZATION”
*GLOBALIZATION*
• Process by which regional economies, societies &
culture have become integrated through a global
network of political ideas.
• Rapid intensification of cross border trade, to &
fro movement of people & ideas ,enhanced
welfare through efficiency gains etc……..
• Era of globalization describes political,
economic,& cultural atmosphere of today.
• It is “glitter for some & gloom for others”.
• In Asia, India has been one of the target of this
controversial reform i.e.
“GLOBALIZATION”
*History Of
Globalization*
• In 1980’s;crisis was caused by account deficits &
currency overvaluation…
• Opening of economy in 1991 by Narasinha Rao
Government.
• Main aim-Rapid growth of Indian Economy &
make it Globally competitive.
• 1st Step-Devaluation of Indian currency by 1819%.
• Today it is broader concept of exchange of
people, culture, values, lifestyle, arts & ideas.
• Root cause for delay of liberalization in India.
• Result-new technologies, new products &
economic opportunities were brought to India.
*Impact of Globalization in
various sectors*
A] Economic Impact
*Private sector -the backbone of its economic
activity.
*It accounts for 75% of its GDP & offers
considerable scope for joint venture &
collaborations.
*In economic sector, sectors like employment,
retail, service & agriculture saw impact of
globalization.
 Employment• Globalization –played an important role in the
generation employment opportunities in India.
• Improvement in GDP of country & its exports
increased.
• Outsourcing industry evolved due to
globalization process.
• Impact on employment is positive as it had led
to increase in employment avenues
• Foreign companies from different sectors
like Banking, IT, Finance, rushed towards
India to outsource their work.
• Petrochemical Industry has evolved &
central Govt. started providing discovered
fields to private sector companies dealing in
petroleum products.
• Result- Inflow of huge FDI in various
sectors in India. e.g.
Industry
Net worth
Textile
US$47billion
Retail
US$6.4billion
Supposed to
touch {approx}
US$115billion
US$23billion
 Retail Sector• Final step in distribution of merchandise &
connects bulk producers of commodities to final
consumers.
• Covers diverse products – food, apparels,
consumer goods, financial services & leisure.
• Indian Retail Formats:
*Traditional Format
-Kiranas
-Kiosks
-Street markets
-Exclusive/multiple
brand markets
Modern Format
-Supermarkets, e.g.
Food world
-Hypermarkets, e.g.
Big Bazaar
-Departmental Stores
e.g. Shoppers Stop
• Earlier shopping was done
on streets & bargaining to
extract best price.
• Nowadays, consumers are
slowly hooked on to mall
culture.
• Scale of operation
generates employment
opportunities.
• India was to have 350
malls-250 malls were
planned in Tier II & Tier III
towns taking revolution
further.
• Gurgaon alone hopes to
play host to some 150 odd
malls.
 Service Sector • Witnessed a major boon & is
one of the major contributors
to both employment &
national income.
• Covers wide activities like
Trading, Banking& Finance,
Real Estate, Transportation,
Security, Management etc.
• Various sectors that combine
together to constitute service
industry are :
- Trade
- Hotels & Restaurants
- Railways
- Other transport & storage
- Communication
- Banking & insurance
- Business services etc.
• While share of services in India’s GDP increased by 21%
points in the 50 years between 1950&2000;nearly 40% of
that increase was concentrated in the nineties…
• Growth was fastest in communication, banking, hotels &
restaurants, community services.
• Reason for sudden growth in service sector was the
liberalization in regulatory framework.
• It gave rise to innovation & higher exports from service
sector.
B] Social impact• It brought an immense change in the
lifestyle, thought process, taste &
preference & way of living of people
in India.
• Socialists in India found certain social
changes like structure of caste, family
patterns & other institutions of
stratification, is dependent on time &
location.
• We observe large variations & trends
in the organizations which are difficult
to measure.
 People –
- Globalization brought various changes
but it had worst effect on Indian
culture, the transition being from
traditional to modern, national to
global & old to new.
- Good effect were only associated
with economy but Indian culture is
worse effected by it.
*Demerits are- Traditional joint family has given
way to nuclear family
- Affected the problem of cost of
living in cities
- Globalization brought different
culture close to each other along
with Foreign satellite channels in
India which bring along violence,
vulgarity in the name of
entertainment for gaining
viewership.
- Western culture shouldn’t be
viewed as an alternative to our
own culture but only as a
supplement.
Changes in
values & culture
• Life has become artificial & materialistic.
• Values are essence of life; they are morals which
build character of human beings.
• Human values such as truth; honesty; tolerance;
cooperation; respect for elders have taken
backseat.
• Celebration of festivals have got a western touch.
Greetings in festivals are not conveyed personally
but with use of technology.
• Interpersonal relationships are directly affected with
a tendency for people to isolate themselves from
others.
• People only talk of excellence but make no efforts
to excel; lack of justice; people do not work with
commitment & dedication.
• Students make little or no efforts to excel but
they want success in their exams.
• Fundamental values have a place only if they fit
with the lives of people.
• Some young people have begun to slide into selfconcept, self-centered individual based values.
Lifestyle
• Integrated way of life of an individual
characterized by his/her manners; attitudes;
values etc.
• Mark able change in lifestyle of young
generation.
• Celebrity culture –being a celebrity has
become greatest achievement in this world.
• Reading up gossips on them; dressing up
like them; copying their hairstyle have
become part & parcel of our lifestyle.
• Career approach has taken backseat & we focus
on shortest way to fame.
• Star - the way of success, is the dream of the
many young people.
• Overnight success values were misled by media
which had negative impact on youth.
• Today’s youth get quick & good money due to
BPO & this enables them to get wild with
damaging effect on health & career.
• Today’s media explosion has made teenage insist
on getting material goods immediately “to be in”
or else they feel inadequate.
Social
Networking
• A new way of world.
• No. of book marking,
sharing & blogging sites
are increasing everyday…
• It is a medium which is
demanding attention..
• Sites have power to deliver
news to more people than
you ever dreamed
possible.
• Modern day youngsters &
college students are mostly
engaging their time in
social networking websites
to stay alive with their
friends.
• E.g. Youtube – World’s famous video sharing
channel which allows its users to upload or view
the videos.
• It is surprising everyone that several social
networking sites are in race to become no. one…
• Facebook is the another famous site among
youngsters. You can share your picture; favourite
videos; could discuss on any topic with your
friends.
• It may seem to be fun but is addictive & ought to
be used in limit.
• Issue of lack of privacy, online bullying, misuse of
information & other such potential misuse can be
dangerous to the users.
C] Technological Impact• Technology has played a
vital role in the
development of our
country.
• It had been undergoing
transformation through
different phases of
regulation & deregulation
of economy.
• Different technologies an
be adopted to serve
consumers in different
culture & languages.
• “World is Flat”-by Thomas
Friedman {indeed a small
place}
• MNC’s are setting up
increasing no. of shift work
centres in India & other
countries.
• Geographical boundaries are no
longer strong enough to restrict
the progress & flow of
technology.
• India has developed a strong IT
industry with workers writing
software programs for America;
Europe & MNC’s.
• Allowing all to be equal players
on world platform.
• Software is highly demanded, so
Indians have greater mobility.
• Indian units of CISCO, INTEL,
IBM, etc have filed applications
with US Patent office engineers
for developing new ideas for
aircraft engines, transport
sytems etc.
• India has the potential not to be
dependent on other countries for
technology, but be independent.
D] Impact on Sports
• Globalization had brought
a big & very huge impact
on sports.
• IPL is one of the most
successful franchise based
sporting tournament
status.
• Features-international
players, coaches,
management, sponsors
etc…
• IPL-Season 2 & Season 3
were streamed live on
“YOUTUBE”.
• IPL had grown its domestic
tournament status.
• Future of this game is unpredictable in longrun; the
stakeholders can expect to make enough money in short to
medium term.
• IPL franchise have earned more money from cricket in last
2 years than PCB has in its entire history.
• Everyone the players, advertisers, administrators, viewers
and fans all shake hands & leave happy……..
• Globalization had hardly brought any impact on other
sports such as football; hockey; boxing; wrestling; etc…
• We thank our Indian Government for giving at least a
chance to Indian talent or else we can see the serious
problem of Indian sports.
Future of globalization in
India
• World’s perception of India has
changed drastically in recent years.
• Cradle of software industry, fastest
growing economy, the world’s
outsourcing hub are the titles used
for India.
• Before Indians were laid back
people, content & fatalistic; But now
they are hungry for recognition,
power & progress & anxious to see
their dream take shape.
• Our belief is our strength; strength
is power that took humans to the
moon.
• This power can work wonders & it
will surely take India to the highest
pedestal of success…
• May be after 50 years we will found
MC DONALD’S,APARTMENTS,JET
PLANES ON MOON……!!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you……….
