QUESTION 5
How did you attract your audience?
Joe Habben
MARKETING TOOLS
•
For our advertising campaign, we would try to get us much attention as possible, to do this, we would have
to use lots of different marketing schemes to broaden the fan base.
•
We would use the core audience of our film to target places to advertise, for example the rough age of our
target audience is between 15-19, this age group would typically read a lot of magazines and watch TV, for
this reason we would advertise our film in the columns and banners of magazines and also advertise on
entire pages, as long as the magazine that we are advertising in is suitable, and we are not advertising to
an uninterested audience. On TV, we would advertise on channels that were in the guidelines of our
audience e.g. E4 and channel 4. In these channels we would put ads that were in between the programs
that suit our film, for example full-length trailers or short promotional trailers.
•
We would use pull advertisement to promote our film on web-based sites and programs such as Spotify,
IMDB and Youtube. On Spotify, we would use audio adverts in between people’s songs because they would
already be paying attention, putting the ads in between songs would prevent annoying them by not
disrupting their music so that they don’t think of our film in a negative way. On IMDB we would use banners
and also ask them to promote our film themselves and recommend it, this would have a huge impact
because IMDB has such a wide audience of film fanatics and we would easily gain more interest from this.
On YouTube we would place advertisements e.g. trailers at the beginning of clips so that when people watch
something that is related to our film, they would see the advertisement of our film first.
•
Another way we would use pull advertising is on social networking sites e.g. Facebook, Twitter and Tumblr.
These sites contain millions of young people that fit our target audience, and a lot of them could notice our
advertisements dotted around the webpages. This would get them talking about our film and pass it on to
friends and whoever they have contact with.
MARKETING TOOLS
•
We would use traditional push advertisement like Billboards, Buses and Bus shelters for our marketing
scheme. All of these advertisements would be seen by the millions of people that commute everyday, even if
they were passing by in a car, bus or train they would catch a glimpse of the film ad and get them thinking
about it, this could also easily help spread the word of our film and widen the audience. We would also use
the traditional method of advertising our film in cinemas, but we would only show our trailer in films that are
suitable to our audience and fit their interests, advertising in cinemas is by far the best way, this is because
you have a lot of people all in one dark room, with amazing sound and video quality that are focused on
nothing but your film trailer.
•
For advertising our film through events, we could use a big marketing scheme like the film ‘Up’ did, where
they glided a hot air balloon down the River Thames with their advertisement on it, this must have gained
them a lot of interest because most people in that massive area of London saw it. For our big marketing
scheme, I think we could get lots of young girl’s that look similar to our main character and make them look
like her, once we have done this we could give them flyers that are shaped like the doll prop, these flyers
would have key information about the film on them. We would dot the girl’s all over London in busy areas
and get them to walk around in a creepy manner, handing out these flyers. This would gain a lot of interest
because so many people would be entertained by this, this scheme would also create mystery as to what
the story is behind this girl and her doll and would attract a lot of customers to watch our film, because
these girl’s would be dotted all over London they would be seen by lots and lots of people, even if these
people did not stop to take a flyer, they would still notice the girl and know that it must be a good film, as it
has so much advertisement.
•
Another thing we could do is get all of the cast of the movie, to promote the film through fan bases, twitter or
their blogs, this would make sure that these fans would go to see the film and support the actors.
MARKETING TOOLS
•
I would cast actors and actresses that are well know for doing work in our
sub-genre, but not too well known because our film is produced by an
independent film company, for example an actress that I would choose to
play a role would be Danielle Harris, who starred in most of the Halloween
series, this shows that she is good at acting in the genre and could be
good at the role of our main character although she might not be young
enough.
•
An actor that I would choose to fit a male role would be Shia LaBeouf
because he is a young actor who is at the beginning of his career but is
making his way up the ranks, he is quite well-known and has starred in a
lot of big films and a variety of genres. Examples of films that he has
starred in are the Transformer trilogy, Disturbia, Constantine and I-Robot.
•
Both of these actors have starred in great films which have gained them a
lot of interest, this would help promote my film because they have fans and
are known for starring in good productions.
AUDIENCE FEEDBACK
In order to gauge how our opening title sequence addressed our target audience, we showed our film to our
target audience and received the following feedback:
•
The audience said that the fact that we hid the girl’s identity added mystery and depth to the OTS and
made you want to watch more. They praised us for the music that we used and said that it fitted the genre
really well, they said ‘ the childish tone of the music complemented the narrative’ and was typical to the
Thriller genre.
•
A lot of the audience commented on the mise en scene, they said that the girl’s old fashioned clothing and
the location really worked well together and the costume had a ‘1950’s feel to it. The room’s tidiness was
mentioned and people said they wanted to know more as to why she cleaned it so much… and reflected the
girl’s mental state well, everyone really liked the concept of the doll and thought it brought a lot of meaning
and iconography to the story.
•
Most people mentioned the editing of the titles and how they sat well with the rest of the footage and didn’t
take over, they said that it ‘pulls your eyes in’. One of the audience mentioned a very good point that the
font of the titles looked like the girl’s hand writing.
Overall, we are very pleased with the comments and reviews of our opening title sequence, we are very
appreciative that people have noticed the amount of work and effort we have put it into this piece and it has paid
off well. Because we have worked on this for so long, the production begins to get boring as you have watched it
so many times, it is really nice to see another set of eyes to see it and hear their feedback.
