Geothermal
Generation of
Energy
By: Leena Daniel, Alejandra
Felgueroso, and Allie Orr
Overview
● Geothermal electricity generation harnesses the heat in the earth’s core to
continuously generate nearly zero-emission renewable electricity.
● Geothermal energy comes from the earth absorbing 47% of the sun’s Energy.
Science Behind It
1. A well is drilled into a known geothermal reservoir.
2. Steam provides rotational or mechanical energy to rotate turbines.
3. Rotational energy from turbine is used to directly spin magnets inside large
coil and create electric current. The energy goes through a transformer to
increase voltage.
4. Injection well returns used geothermal fluids.

Criticisms
1. Environmental Issues
2. Surface Instability
3. Expensive
4. Location Specific
5. Sustainability Issues
Summary
By the year 2050:
• Produce 8.3 % of total
worldwide electricity
• Serve 17 % of the world
population
• Save up to 1000 million
tons/year in CO2
