SIL relays
Functional safety – what is it?
Process Plant and machinery can lead to dangerous failures and malfunctions of risk to people,
environment and property values. These risks must be evaluated on a risk analysis by plant
operators. Depending on the risk resulting from this action to reduce risk by avoiding errors, error
detection and error control are derived. The main goal is to ensure that plant and machinery can be
operated safely
example:
In 1984-12-03 thousands of people die in the largest chemical accident in
Bhopal / India due to technical problems in the U.S. chemical company
Union Carbide Corporation.
Several tons of toxic substances leaked into the atmosphere.

Application
Emergency shutdown of plant items in the process industry, due to the risk
analysis
- Additional overfill prevention of oil tanks
- Safe switch-off of motors and valves, stopping supply of oil and gas
- Safe shutdown of process parts in the chemical industry.
The SIL3 – Relay is not designed for protection of humans, according to standards
EN ISO 13849-1 or EN 62061 (machinery safety)!

SAFESERIES – typical functionality
De-energize-to-Safe to switch valves and tubes
-Device is always “ON” and in ESD case or other
errors, e.g. power down, the relay release and
contact circuit open
- To ensure the opening/breaking of the output,
three relays are serial connected
- Some customer requires remote contact from
the field, therefore a version with Multi-voltage
Remote contact is available
- For corrosive atmosphere, a version with G3coating is available
