MCAT QUESTION OF THE DAY!
Answer the question and win a prize!
You readdddyyy?
MCAT Question of the Day!
Biology: Binary fission is an example of
A. asexual reproduction.
B. sexual reproduction.
C. oogenesis.
D. spermatogenesis.
Correct Answer: A
• Binary fission is a technique used by some
unicellular organisms whereby the genetic
contents are replicated and the cell divides
into two identical daughter cells. This
process is analogous to mitosis which is
performed by eukaryotes.
MCAT Question of the Day!
General Chemistry:
• Which of the following substances is
least soluble in water?
A. ZnS, Ksp = 2 x 10-25
B. CuS, Ksp = 8 x 10-37
C. CdS, Ksp = 1 x 10-27
D. HgS, Ksp = 8 x 10-53
Correct Answer: D
• Ksp is the equilibrium constant for the
solvation of a substance. The numerator of
this equilibrium reaction contains the
products (i.e. the solubilized species) while
the denominator contains the undissolved
species. Thus the less soluble the
compound, the lower the numerator and
the lower the Ksp. Therefore we are looking
for the compound with the lowest
Ksp which is HgS.
MCAT Question of the Day!
Physics:
• Lead acid batteries, like those typically found in vehicles,
are composed primarily of lead and sulfuric acid. An
individual cell of the battery has a voltage of 2 V, but
batteries for cars typically will have a voltage of 12 V. This
increase in voltage can be accomplished in which of the
following ways?
•
•
•
•
A. placing the cells in Parallel
B. placing the cells in Series
C. adding more lead to the cells
D. increasing the concentration of sulfuric acid in the cells
Correct Answer: B
• Placing cells or batteries in series will add
their voltage, while placing them in parallel
will keep the voltage the same. Because
electric potential is an intensive property,
the amount of either of the half-reaction
components will not affect the voltage;
adding more lead or sulfuric acid may
increase the capacity rating (in Amphours) but will not increase the voltage
(potential difference) of the cell or battery.
MCAT Question of the Day!
Organic Chemistry:
A student is discerning whether a reaction involving an alkane
proceeds through an SN1 or an SN2 mechanism. Upon
studying the products, the student concludes the reaction is
proceeding through an SN1 mechanism. Which of the
following pieces of evidence could the student be using to
make this claim?
•
•
•
•
A. The reaction takes place under basic conditions.
B. The reaction produces an alkene.
C. The reaction produces a racemic mixture.
D. The primary reactant is a secondary alkyl group.
Correct Answer: C
• SN1 mechanisms proceed through a
carbocation formation step which, when attacked
by the nucleophile, can produce either of two
enantiomers equally. Therefore the products of
an SN1 reaction are typically racemic, making
(C) the correct answer. (B) is incorrect because
alkenes would be formed from elimination
reactions. (C) would not suggest strongly in one
direction or another. (D) may be suggestive of an
SN2 mechanism but is not definitive as SN1
reactions can occur with secondary alkanes as
well.

AMSA Quote of the Week!
“People are often unreasonable, irrational, and self-centered.
Forgive them anyway.
If you are kind, people may accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives.
Be kind anyway.
If you are successful, you will win some unfaithful friends and some genuine
enemies. Succeed anyway.
If you are honest and sincere people may deceive you.
Be honest and sincere anyway.
What you spend years creating, others could destroy overnight.
Create anyway.
If you find serenity and happiness, some may be jealous.
Be happy anyway.
The good you do today, will often be forgotten.
Do good anyway.
Give the best you have, and it will never be enough.
Give your best anyway.
In the final analysis, it is between you and God.
It was never between you and them anyway.”
~Mother Teresa
