The origins and the complex history of liquidcrystal displays from the perspective of an
insider during the early days were described

A 'liquid crystal display' ('LCD') is a flat
panel display, electronic visual display,
video display that uses the light
modulating properties of Liquid
Crystals|liquid crystals (LCs). LCs do
not emit light directly. A character
display type is limited to and
specialized for display of alphanumeric
characters.

There are multiple technologies that have been
used to implement liquid crystal displays

Cholesteric liquid crystal display

A US company, [http://www.kentdisplays.com/
Kent Displays], has developed no power

using Polymer Stabilized Cholesteric Liquid
Crystals: these are known as ChLCD
screens. A drawback of ChLCD screens is
their slow refresh rate, especially at low
temperatures. In 2009, Kent demonstrated
the use of a ChLCD to cover the entire
surface of a mobile phone, allowing it to
change colours, and keep that colour even
when power is cut off.

Thin film transistor liquid crystal display - Construction
The liquid crystal displays used in
calculators and other devices with similarly
simple displays have direct-driven image
elements, and therefore a voltage can be
easily applied across just one segment of
these types of displays without interfering
with the other segments
