What is in a
substation?
What makes substation work?

Ground Wire
• What do you think a
“ground wire” does?
Ground wires prevent user
contact with dangerous
voltage if electrical insulation
fails.

Transformers
What do you think
Transformers do?
•
Transformers can
be used to vary
the relative
voltage of circuits
or isolate them, or
both.

Disconnect Switch
• What do you
think a
disconnect
switch does?
In electrical engineering, a
disconnector, disconnect
switch or is used to ensure
that an electrical circuit is
completely de-energised.
Circuit Breaker
•
What do you think
a circuit breaker
does?
A circuit breaker is a manually or
automatically operated electrical
switch designed to protect an
electrical circuit from damage
caused by overload or short
circuit.
Lightning Arrester
•
What do you think a
lightning arrester does?
A lightning arrester is a device used on electrical power
systems and telecommunications systems to protect the
insulation and conductors of the system from the
damaging effects of lightning. The typical lightning
arrester has a high-voltage terminal and a ground
terminal. When a lightning surge (or switching surge,
which is very similar) travels along the power line to the
arrester, the current from the surge is diverted through the
arrestor, in most cases to earth.
