Benefits
The primary functions of ionizers are to:
• Neutralize process necessary insulators that can charge ESDS devices/
assemblies via induction, thus creating potential CDM damage
• Neutralize ESDS devices / assemblies that are not grounded, and
therefore are a floating conductor, thus creating potential CDM damage

EMIT Benchtop Zero Volt Ionizer
Description
The Zero Volt Benchtop is a compact and lightweight dual
steady state DC auto-balancing benchtop ionizer. The unit is
normally placed at one end of the workbench or area to be
neutralized. It may also be wall used in conjunction with an
ionizer mounting arm to save valuable workspace. The
ionizer's neutralization time will be best approximately 12” to
36” directly in front of the ESDS device. Decay times will
increase as the distance from the unit increases.

EMIT Benchtop Zero Volt Ionizer
Operation
Set the fan speed switch on the rear of the unit to the
LOW, MED, or HI position. Higher airflow will result in
faster neutralization rates. Position the unit so
that the maximum airflow is directed at the items or
area to be neutralized. Turn the unit ON.
When the unit is first turned on, it conducts a self-test.
The audible alarm will sound and then the LED will
cycle through RED, YELLOW, and then GREEN. The
LED will remain GREEN during normal operation.

Description
The Overhead Zero Volt Ionizer combines the effectiveness of steadystate DC ionization with ease of adjustability, communication capability,
and the flexibility of a microcontroller based design to produce a
versatile and stable ionization system. Available in both two or three
fan. Three fans produce extended ionization coverage, and are ideal
for areas where bench space is limited.

Operation
The unit is powered on and off by using the keys
supplied with the unit. The key switch
is located on the left end of the unit along with the
RS485 input/output ports for the optional ZVI software
package. The control buttons along with the LED
display are located on the front of the unit.

“Necessary non-conductors in the environment cannot lose their electrostatic charge by
attachment to ground. Ionization systems provide neutralization of charges on these
necessary non-conductive items (circuit board materials and some device packages are
examples of necessary non-conductors). Assessment of the ESD hazard created by
electrostatic charges on the necessary nonconductors in the work place is required to
ensure that appropriate actions are implemented, commensurate with risk to ESDS (ESD
sensitive) items”. (ANSI/ESDS20.20-2007 Foreword)
“In order to mitigate field-induced CDM [Charged Device Model] damage, the ESD program
shall include a plan for the handling of process-required insulators. If the field exceeds 2,000
volts/inch, steps shall be taken to either: A) Separate the insulator from the ESD-sensitive
device by a distance of 30 cm (12 inches); or B) Use ionization or other charge mitigating
techniques to neutralize the charge.” (ANSI/ESDS20.20-2007 section 8.3)
