SETTING UP YOUR VALUE
OR FACT DEBATE CASE

1. Start with a brief introduction that incorporates:

An attention getter that sets the stage

A statement of your proposition

Sample introduction: Nick Fury once had an idea. It was to “Bring
together a group of remarkable people, so when we needed them,
they could fight the battles we never could.” That group of people
are the “Avengers,” a superior collection of crisis fighters, which is
why I stand resolved that Marvel’s Avengers are better defenders of
Planet Earth than DC Comic’s League of Justice.
AFFIRMATIVE CASE INTRODUCTION

The first are of the body is criteria

Criteria is the standards by which ‘better’ will be determined.

Without criteria there’s no way to make a fair comparison

The criteria should be general

It should offer reasons why these standards are valid for the topic

It should NOT address the topic of marvel characters specifically
BODY OF THE CASE

I suggest we evaluate what makes someone ‘better’ should be based on:

1. Strength: Strength is always a consideration in contests of dominion
whether we like it or not. German Prime Minister Otto von Bismarck remarks:
“Until the end of the world, the great questions of the day will not be settled
by means of speeches and majority decisions but by iron and blood.” So it’s
only reasonable that we consider the ability of the group in question to
provide strength

2. Intelligence: Critical thinking is crucial to making quality, snap decisions.

3. One’s Moral Compass: Strength and intelligence without moral ethics,
leads to an abuse of power, so for that reason, we should consider the
ethical qualities of the two groups. Winston Churchill once spoke to the
importance of a moral compass in conjunction with world leadership: “the
world cannot be protected unless the needs of others are prevalent to the
people who protect it.”
EXAMPLE CRITERIA

The rest of the speech will be made up of contentions (main
points) one for each criteria.

So this case will have three more contentions

1 for demonstrating superior strength

1 for demonstrating superior intelligence

1 for demonstrating superior moral compass

These contentions should be full of evidence supporting each point.

There is a sample contention on the following slide
CONTENTIONS

A. Captain America has an impeccable sense of ethics and
willingness to sacrifice himself for others
(follow this up with evidence 1. 2..)
B. Thor cannot wield his hammer without being ‘worthy’ of the
power. ((have evidence 1. 2. )
C. DC Justice League struggle to maintain a consistent moral
code
CONTENTION III AVENGERS HAVE A
STRONG MORAL COMPASS:
