Who was Confucius?
Confucius:
1. Was a famous thinker and social philosopher of
China, whose teachings have deeply influenced East
Asia for centuries.
2. He was convinced of his ability to restore the world's
order, though failed. After much traveling around
China to promote his ideas among rulers, he
eventually became involved in teaching disciples.
3. His philosophy emphasized personal and
governmental morality, correctness of social
relationships, and justice and sincerity.
Some of his philosophies…
Confucius himself had a simple moral and
political teachings:
• to love others;
• to honor one's parents;
• to do what is right instead of what is of
advantage;
• to practice "reciprocity," i.e. "don't do to others
what you would not want yourself";
• to rule by moral example instead of by force and
violence;
What is Confucianism?
Religion or philosophy?
Confucianism holds true that:
Humans are naturally good.
You should respect and follow your elders.
Education is strongly emphasized.
Being polite is very important.
Your ancestors should be worshipped as
they help provide you guidance.
Ying and yang represent opposite forces
that keep balance and harmony in nature.
Religion or philosophy?
Confucianism is the complex system
of moral, social, political, and religious
teaching built up by Confucius and
the ancient Chinese traditions.
Confucianism goal is making not only
the man virtuous, but also making him
the man of learning and of good
manners. The perfect man must
combine the qualities of a saint,
scholar, and gentleman.
Not a religion, but a philosophy
No church nor clergy;
no teaching on the worship of God or
gods, or life after death.
Confucianism is actually a philosophy
of life, not a Religion... like Buddhism.
Philosophy continued…
Some say that Confucianism is not
religion in reality, because Confucius
is a philosopher, moralist, statesman
and educationist, but no religionist.
They say that the thoughts and
teachings of Confucius are ethical
philosophy, political and educational
principle, but not religious philosophy.
Confucian Analects…
Learning without thought is labor lost;
thought without learning is perilous.
Respect yourself and others will respect
you.
It does not matter how slowly you go so
long as you do not stop.
To see what is right, and not to do it, is
want of courage or of principle.
He who speaks without modesty will find it
difficult to make his words good.
Analects continued…
Hold faithfulness and sincerity as first
principles.
Have no friends not equal to yourself.
When you have faults, do not fear to
abandon them.
Fine words and an insinuating
appearance are seldom associated
with true virtue.
In teaching, there should be no
distinction of classes."
