THE WHITE PALM
Traditional crafts
ATADO
The first step in the development of the White Palma is to shut the eye of palm tree with
handmade ropes forming a cone, getting the new palms are born not perform
photosynthesis. Receiving little light, those palm trees turn yellowish white.
ENCAPERUZADO
Some months later, from Palm Sunday to August, palm farmers climb to the top of palm
trees again and cover them with leaves or with a special dark plastic. Once hooded, they
are protected from the sun but they still receive some light through some gaps in order to
keep on growing until 4 metres high, maximum.
RECOLECCIÓN
The harvest is carried out from September to Palm Sunday’s Eve. The palm trees, which
have grown hooded, are cut off, and only the needed leaves are kept not to damage the
palm tree nor its growing.
LIMPIEZA
Afterwards, a selection process takes place depending on the dimensions and qualities,
and another one based on the cleaning. To finish turning them yellowish white, they are
planed one by one, and introduced into special pools to whiten them. They are also put in
a properly-equipped storage room to keep them at their best until they are sent as straight
white palm leaves or, if not, until they start to be woven or plaited.
TRENZADO
It is women, popularly known as curling ("Plaiters"), who usually take charge of the plaiting of
the white palm. It is a task that takes a lot of dedication for it is hard to teach how to carry out
such a laborious process.
The skill and talent of those master craftswomen have to join forces in order to give birth to
very various models, between 5 centimetres and 3.7 metres, which will be taken by the hand or
worn in the lapel. The palm tree leaves are packed in single bags, and are kept in cold stores
with sulphur until they are used.
The great range of designs, are the fruits of the artists’ pure inspiration. Leaves are plaited,
joint and sewn in order to make decorative motifs like stars, chain stitches, crosses, virgins, balls,
flowers, etc., which are added little by little to the central palm leaf and thus manage to get
beautiful, impressive results.
