What are the
main parts of
this tree?
What is the
function of each
part?
As we have learned, vascular plants can grow quite
large thanks to their vascular tissues. Vascular
tissues transport substances through the interior of
the plant much like the circulatory system does in
animals. As water evaporates from the leaves of a
plant, more water is drawn up by osmosis from the
tissues below to replace it.
In you lab groups, use the equipment below to
create a demonstration showing how vascular
tissues provide plants with the necessary
water and nutrients.
MATERIALS:
•Celery stalk with leaves intact
•Metric ruler
•400-mL beaker
•Distilled water
•Glass bowl
•Red food coloring
•Razor blade
•Stirring rod
Write your procedures on the
left page of your biology
notebook

At the conclusion of your
demonstration you should be able
to answer these questions.
QUESTIONS:
1. What type of tissue moves water
upward in a plant stem?
2. What type of tissue moves
nutrients down in a plant?
3. What is transpiration and where
does it occur in plants?
4. How does transpiration help the
upward movement of water?

questions
and answer
them on the
