A farmer has to get a sack of corn, a chicken, and a fox
across a river. The farmer is only able to bring one of the
above items along with him at a time. The only problem
is if he leaves the fox alone with the chicken, the fox will
eat the chicken,
and if he leaves
the chicken along
the corn sack,
then the chicken
will eat the corn
sack. How does
the farmer get all
3 items across
safely
Answer:
The farmer brings the chicken across. Goes back and brings the fox across, and brings
the chicken back with him to the other side of the river and drops off the chicken, then
he goes and brings the corn sack across, and finally he goes back for the chicken and
brings it across.

What criteria did you use
to group your organisms?
Could you break any of your
groups down into
sub-groups?
12
Species of Organisms
•There are 13 billion known
species of organisms
•This is only 5% of all
organisms that ever lived!!!!!
•New organisms are still being
found and identified
13
What is Classification?
Classification is the
arrangement of organisms into
orderly groups based on their
similarities
Classification is also known as
taxonomy
Taxonomists are scientists that
identify & name organisms
14
Benefits of Classifying
•organisms
Accurately & uniformly names
•starfish
Prevents misnomers such as
& jellyfish that aren't
really fish
Uses same language (Latin or
some Greek) for all names

Standardized Naming
•Binomial nomenclature
used
•Genus + specific epithet
Turdus migratorius
•Latin or Greek
•Italicized in print
•Capitalize genus, but
NOT specific epithet
•Underline when writing
