How do different materials
move in plants?
• Roots
– xylem: moves water and
minerals up from roots to
the stem
– phloem: carries sugar
from leaves down the
stem and into roots

– taproots: thick; grow deep
(carrots, beets)
– fibrous roots: thin (grass)
– prop roots: finger-like
(corn)
What is the transport
system made of?
• Xylem and phloem continue
up from the roots all the way
through the stem.
• cambium: layer in stem
where new xylem and
phloem are made.

• A ring of xylem grows every
year, so you can count the
rings to determine the age of
the tree.
