What are Blizzards?
A violent snowstorm with
winds blowing at a minimum
speed of 35 miles (56
kilometers) per hour and
visibility of less than onequarter mile (400 meters)
for three hours.
A very heavy snowstorm
with high winds.
What conditions cause a Blizzards?
A blizzard is a severe weather condition
characterized by low temperatures and
strong winds (greater than 35 mph) bearing
a great amount of snow, either falling or
blowing.
Blizzards generally occur when cold polar air
comes down and mixes with warm and
moist air from lower latitudes. It requires a
few more complex elements in the
atmosphere to get a storm system going,
but once it does it can feed on these
temperature differences to become stronger.
The stronger a storm gets, the "deeper" the
low pressure at the center (lower, in other
words), which helps to enhance the winds,
creating a blizzard.
It occurs when a cold air mass moves out of
the Arctic into the temperate zone. The
heavy cold sinks along the boundary
between the two air masses. This boundary
is called a cold front.
When dose this phenomenon
happen?
Most of the time blizzards are in the
winter when the cold seasons come in.
But if you live in the arctic or high in the
mountains, then it could be anytime.
What kind of damage to property
can a Blizzard do?
A blizzard is a heavy snowstorm containing
strong winds.
So there could be wind damage, and there
can be damage due to the weight of snow.
The weight of snow can cause roves' to
collapse, a tree branches to break.
Hazardous conditions including:
Very low visibility
Frostbite
Hypothermia
Power outages
Pipes can freeze
Can kill people
Animal and plant loss
High snow drifts
!!What you need to know when a
Blizzard happens!!
To stay in a safe warm place with plenty
of food.
Stay in until you know its safe to get out.
Keep small house animals in because they
could freeze to death. That also go’s for
people.
