Hands-On Science
These lessons are designed to reinforce
the State Science Standards.
Heat/Cold
The atmosphere has physical properties that are
measurable and predictable.(VI A4)k-4
Heat causes materials to increase in temperature
and feel warmer, or change state (gas, liquid or
solid). (III C2)k-4
Warm objects lose heat to cooler ones until
they reach the same temperature.
(III C3)k-4
These activities will address the following
Hazelwood Objectives for fifth grade:
Heat/Cold
Demonstrate the effects of heat on air
Be able to tell that hot air is lighter
than cold air
Place one hand in a
bowl of very warm
water…..
Place one hand in a
bowl of very cool
water…..
In a third bowl, have a mixture
of half warm and half cold water
mixed together. One at a time,
place one hand into this third
bowl. How did the warm hand
feel? How did the cold hand
feel? Record your response in
your journal.
My warm hand felt cold in the
mixed bowl. My cold hand felt
warm in the mixed bowl. The water
in the third bowl is not two
different temperatures, it’s just
one medium temperature. Our body
does not sense temperature well.
Our sense of temperature depends
on where we’ve been.
