Definitions for fad diet:
❖
FamilyDoctor.org
“A fad diet is a weight loss plan or aid that
promises dramatic results”
(familydoctor.org, 2013, p. 1 )
❖
Wikipedia.org
“Fad diets are referred to idiosyncratic
diets and eating patterns that promote shortterm weight loss, usually with no concern for
long-term weight maintenance, and enjoy
temporary popularity”
(wikipedia.org, 2012, p. 1)
(Food Boyage, 2014)
Fad diets are becoming more popular.
Why?
❖
Preach “quick and easy” weight loss
❖
Claim to help make you look or feel better
❖
The consumer becomes desperate
❖
Short term
❖
Weight loss/advertisement companies take advantage of this fact
(familydoctor.org, 2013, p. 1 )
“If a diet or product sounds
to good to be true, it probably is”
❖
Misinformation:
•
No food or pill can magically melt fat away
•
No super foods can alter your genetic code
•
No products will melt belly fat while you watch t.v. or sleep
For example: Belly Burner Band, Body wraps, body vibration machines
to reduce cellulite
(Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, 2012, p. 1)
How to spot a fad diet:
❖
Promises quick fix
❖
Promotes ‘magic’ foods or
combinations of foods
❖
Excludes or severely restricts
food groups or nutrients
❖
Has rigid rules that focus on
weight loss
❖
Makes claims based on a single
study or testimonials only

Personal experience?
Negativity’s of fad diets:
❖
Symptoms:
•
Dehydration
•
Weakness & fatigue
•
Nausea and headaches
•
Constipation
•
Inadequate vitamin and mineral intake
(betterhealth.vic.gov.au, 2014, p. 1)
❖
Physical effects:
•
•
•
•
•
•
Because these low calorie restricted diets are nutritionally unbalanced they are very difficult to
maintain in the long run.
Fat diets do result in rapid weight loss, but the question is where is the weight coming from?
Early on in weight loss, our bodies use the fat we have stored as energy.
❖ Why is this bad?
Our brain senses this and sets of an internal alarm that alters the body’s metabolism.
The body burns off protein along with muscle, in turn slowing down metabolic rate.
As a result, the weight lost returns, and then some.
(betterhealth.vic.gov.au, 2014, p. 1)
If fad diet’s aren’t the answer,
what is?
(www.exerscribe.com, 2013)
Balance
❖
Equilibrium
In relation to diet,
“providing foods in proportion to one
another and in proportion to the body’s
needs” (Whitney & Rolfes, 2013, p. GL-3)
❖
(fscn.cfans.umn.edu, 2010)
❖
Eat plenty of fruits, vegetables, & legumes
❖
Include a variety of cereals
•
breads, rice, pasta, noodles
❖
Include milk, yogurts, cheese or alternatives
❖
Drink plenty of water
❖
Limit saturated fat and moderate total fat intake
❖
Choose reduced fat varieties of foods where possible
❖
Choose foods low in salt
❖
Limit your alcohol intake, if you choose to drink
❖
Consume moderate amounts of sugars, and food and drinks containing added sugars.
In particular, limit sugar-sweetened beverages.
(betterhealth.vic.gov.au, 2014, p. 1)
Steering clear of fad diets
❖
5 Identifiers
1.
Rapid weight loss
•
2.
Quantities & limitations
•
3.
There is no evidence to support that combining certain foods or eating foods during specific times of the day will
help affective weight loss.
Rigid menu
•
5.
Ditch diets allow unlimited quantities of food, such as the grapefruit or cabbage soup diet. Eating the same things
over and over gets boring. Avoid any diet that eliminates/ restricts entire food groups.
Specific food combinations
•
4.
Slow, steady weight loss is more long term than dramatic weight changes. Healthy plans aim for a loss of no more
than 1 to 2 pounds her week.
As yourself, “Can I eat this way for the the rest of my life?” If you answered no, be on your way.
No need to exercise
•
Any diet that claims you can lose unwanted weight without any form of physical activity, should stop you dead in
your tracks. Physical activity is essential for good health and healthy weight management. The key is to find
physical activities that YOU enjoy.
(Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, 2012, p. 1)
Benefits of weight loss:
❖
Confidence
❖
Feel emotionally & physically
better
❖
Increases mind set
❖
Positive attitude & outlook

Time to play:
FAD OR NOT-FAD
Scenario #1
“After a few too many sweet treats it’s always a good idea to include
plenty of sugar detoxing ingredients like the ones discussed in
yesterday’s Tone It Up Members email! With kale, cucumber, lemon,
turmeric & lots of ginger, this zesty blend contains just a few of the
essential ingredients you want to load up on today.”
FAD OR NOT-FAD?
(Dawn & Hodgson, 2013, p. 1)
NOT-FAD
Scenario #2
“Cayenne Pepper: The burning sensation in your mouth is responsible for its effect of
heating up the body and increasing energy expenditure. Participants in the study who
ate cayenne not only had a stronger metabolism boost, but also fewer cravings for salty,
fatty and sweet foods than those who took it in pill form.”
FAD OR NOT-FAD?
(McCarthy, 2014, p. 1)
FAD
Scenario #3
“Before every meal, try this slim down drink of a choice – a mixture of
grapefruit juice and apple cider vinegar. Simply mix 1 cup of grapefruit
juice with 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar, stir, and enjoy. Drink
Dr. Oz’s secret slim down drink before every meal and you’ll literally
burn away your fat while enjoying a citrusy delight. “
FAD OR NOT-FAD?
(Oz, 2012, p. 1)

Quick tips:
Don’t strive to look like the unrealistic images fed to us through the
media; Strive to look like a better, stronger YOU.
Eat breakfast every day and don’t skip meals.
Include balance & variety in your diet.
Get moving in ways customized for you.
Food for thought:
Fad dieting is one pressure you don’t need in your life.
A healthy eating plan will help you feel better and give you more energy.
“Stay motivated by the image of your life that
lies ahead.”
