INIDICATIVE MOOD OR
SUBJUNCTIVE MOOD?
The indicative mood is used when
we know an action is a reality or will
be a reality. The indicative indicates
or points something out; is factual; is objective;
stands alone; is independent.
Study the following sentences.
Saco buenas notas.
Sacaba buenas notas en la primaria también
Estudiaré para el examen después de las clases.
Indicative, statement of fact, independent clause
Discussing what may
or may not take place
The subjunctive mood is used to
express an action that is
desired or hoped for but that is
not necessarily real. Study the
following sentences.
Saco buenas notas. Indicative, statement of fact, independent clause
Mis padres quieren que (yo) saque buenas notas.
Contains a dependent clause (that I get good grades)
Action expressed in the dependent clause is an action desired or hoped for but
not necessarily real. Therefore the dependent clause must be in the subjunctive.
El subjuntivo
The subjunctive is a “mood”. It is used to express that which is
not necessarily true or real. It expresses things that might
happen, that you hope or want to happen. There two tenses,
present subjunctive and past subjunctive.
