Infinitives
Infinitive Review
You already know the following things about
infinitives :
1. They are the 2nd principle part of the verb
2. They always end in the letters “re”
3. They mean “to _____”
ex. Amare = to love
(make sure this is in your notes from earlier this year – if not write it
down now!)
Infinitives – New Stuff
Infinitives are often used to complete the action
of the main verb. ex: Mrs. H likes to read. “to
read” is what I like to do it is an infinitive that
completes the verb likes. This is called a
complimentary infinitive.
Infinitives – More New Stuff
There are some verbs that frequently use
complimentary infinitives. They are:
Vult – he wants
Non Vult – he does not want
Necesse est – it is necessary
Timet – he is afraid
Amat – he likes
A Few Examples
Cornelia legere vult.
Cornelia wants to read.
Marcus currere nolunt.
Marcus does not want to run.
Necesse est festinare. It is necessary to hurry.
Flavia arborem ascendere timet.
Flavia is afraid to climb a tree.
Cornelia dormire amat.
Cornelia likes to sleep.
