The last of the verbals.
What are infinitives?
 They are formed by taking “to” plus a verb
 To go, to run, to fly, to swim
 Infinitives are verbals that can be adjectives,
adverbs, or nouns!
 Let’s deal with infinitives as nouns…
What are the functions of a noun?
 SUBJECT
 DIRECT OBJECT
 INDIRECT OBJECT (not too often)
 OBJECT OF THE PREPOSITION
(hardly ever)
 PREDICATE NOMINATIVE
 THAT’S PREDICATE NOMINATIVE
So, tell me how these infinitives are
functioning.
To win is important.
I hate to lose.
My goal is to travel.
Infinitive phrases
 What can these be? Duh.
 Intinitives PLUS words that relate to it.
 Whole phrase behaves like a noun, adverb,
or adjective
 Example:
 To love grammar is hard.
 My goal is to pass language arts.
Put it all together…find the infinitive
and tell me what it is doing.
 We hoped to travel this summer.
 I am learning to ski this winter.
 To write a book would be easy.
 The best habit is to work slowly.
 The book was easy to read.
 He started to faint, so he went to the doctor.
 The doctor to see was out to lunch.
