• Perfect Tenses=have, has, had + past.part.
• I have eaten a sandwich.
• Progressive Tenses=being verb + pres. part.
• I am eating a sandwich.
• Passive Voice=being verb = past part
• The sandwich was eaten by me
For action sequences, use the
active voice
• His broom was vibrating so
hard, it was almost impossible
for him to hang on much
longer.
• Harry’s broom vibrated
violently; he struggled to hang
on.
Active voice speeds up the
sentence
• Marcus Flint seized the Quaffle and
scored five times without anyone noticing.
• The Quaffle was seized by Marcus Flint,
and the score was increased five times
without anyone noticing.
Use passive voice for end focus
• The Quidditch match was won by the
Griffendors.
• The Griffendors won the Quidditch match.
Avoid overuse of being verbs
• Subject + being verb + predicate adjective
• Hermione was anxious to see her friends.
• Progressive Tense
• She was fighting her way through the
crowded common room.
• Passive Voice
• Hermione was greeted by Ron and Harry.
