VERB TENSES
The simple present
tense
We use the simple present to
express habits, permanent truths.
EX. 1: He reads the newspaper every
morning.
Ex. 2: I go to school every day
Ex. 3: Water boils at 100 C˚
Remember!
• Verb to be – (ser, estar)
• I am, You are, He is,
She is, It is, We are,
You are, They are
Ex. 4: They are at home
Ex. 5: We are Students
Ordinary Verbs
You just have to worry with the
third person singular. We add “s”
Ex. 6: She Likes Apples
When the ordinary verbs end
in: o, x, z, s, ss, ch
We add “es”
Ex. 7: She goes to school every
day (verb to go)
Verbs ending in consonant + y
You substitute for ies
Ex. 8: She studies math
Simple Past
Regular verbs –Add “ed”
Verbs ending with
consonant + y – We can
substitute the “y” for “ied”
Simple past
• This verb tense is used to express actions
that finished in a definite time in the past.
• We use adverbs like: yesterday, last year,
last week, ago…
Ex. 9: He climbed a mountain
yesterday
Ex. 10: He cleaned the house last
week
Active and passive voice
• Active: Somebody cleans the
office
Passive
• Passive: The office is cleaned (by
somebody)
• (It emphasizes the action)
• The Passive is: Present simple (am, is
are) + Past Participle
• Or…
• Past simple (was/were) + Past Participle
Ex. 13: She opened the door.
(Active voice)
Ex. 14: The door was opened.
(passive voice)
