Texas
Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS)
• The curriculum is based in the
which are the state mandated standards.
• The 2nd Grade TEKS can be downloaded from
the Texas Education Agency’s (TEA)
website.
• Each teacher may then add her own individuality
and creativity to the lessons that teach these
mandated skills.
Reading
Kindergarten and 1st Grade focuses primarily on
“learning to read”. 2nd Grade continues learning to
read, but also begins to focus on “reading to learn”
(building comprehension skills).
We will work on reading in a variety of ways.
• Whole class instruction
• Guided reading groups
• Partner reading
• Fluency practice
• Children should be reading 20 minutes aloud to you
every night. A reading log and activity will be due
every other Monday.
• The state of Texas states that a student should be
reading 90 wpm by the end of 2nd grade.
Spelling
• The Second grade spelling will guided by
the Second grade TEKS and a district
created curriculum.
• The Spelling tests will be given on Friday
and will include 15 spelling words and
dictation sentences.
• A list of spelling practice ideas will be
given once a month.
Language
Basic grammar
• parts of speech (noun,
verb, etc.)
• types of sentences
(statement, question,
etc.)
• subject and predicate of
a sentence
• other skills to promote
grammatically correct
writing and speaking
Writing
• writing a good
expanded sentence
• developing a good
paragraph
• the writing process
– pre-write
– drafting
– revising
– editing
– publishing
• journal writing
Math
• The curriculum is based on the district’s scope and
sequence.
• We primarily use Investigations and supplement
with various other resources.
• Basic addition and subtraction facts form the
foundation for progressing in math!
• Mastering addition and subtraction facts is a
must before entering 3rd Grade!
• Flashcards are a great way to practice. They can
be purchased anywhere or made for practice at
home.
• Homework will be given twice a week for math.
Science & Social Studies
Science and Social Studies consist of content, hands on
activities, and various experiments and projects.
Science
• We will do many hands
on experiments and
science notebooking.
• Curriculum is TEKS
based and follows the
district’s scope and
sequence.
Social Studies
• It will be integrated
into our reading time.
• Curriculum is TEKS
based.
• Social skills (Second
Step program)
SPUR Folder
• Students use this folder to help them become
more responsible.
• Important papers and homework are sent and
returned in this folder.
• Daily behavior is recorded in this folder.
• Please don’t forget to review your child’s folder
daily and check their homework for accuracy.
• This folder can be a great communicator between
parent, teacher, and school.
Late Work AND Unfinished Assignments
• If a student is absent, he or she will have
ample time to complete the missed
assignments (as stated in the district
guidelines).
• If an assignment is not completed during the
day, your child may be sent to a study hall
during recess in order to complete it.

Redo Papers
• Any paper that receives a grade below a 70
will be redone by the student at school,
usually with the direction of the teacher.

Morning Procedures
• The school doors open at 7:55.
• Any student that arrives before 8:15
should report to the gym or café to eat
breakfast.
• Teachers will pick up students in the gym
at 8:15.
• Students are considered TARDY if they
are not in the classroom at 8:25.
• Being on time starts the day off right!
Dismissal Procedures
• School is officially over at 3:25.
• Children will be accounted for by their
color coded dismissal cards.
• Each child will give the teacher on duty
his/her card as he/she leaves the school.
• If your child will be leaving school
differently than normal, please call or
send a note (preferably prior to 2:25).
We want to insure the safety of your child.
We the 2nd Grade teachers would like to thank
you for coming.
