Peace Prize
Is a prize a good idea for
recognizing what people do?
Advent - Peace
Alfred Nobel
• Alfred Nobel was a Swedish scientist and engineer
who created a fortune through his many inventions.
• When he died, he left instructions for most of his
money to be used for an annual prize to be awarded
to people who have “… during the preceding year,
shall have conferred the greatest benefit to
mankind.”
• These awards are in physics, chemistry, medicine,
literature and promoting peace between nations.
Dynamite!
• Alfred Nobel was also famous for being the inventor
of dynamite.
• Can you think why we might find this ironic now?
Nobel Prize
Nobel Laureate
In Greek mythology, the god Apollo is represented
wearing a laurel wreath on his head.
A laurel wreath is a circular crown made of branches and
leaves of the bay laurel (In latin: Laurus nobilis). In
Ancient Greece, laurel wreaths were awarded to victors as
a sign of honour - both in athletic competitions and in
poetic meets.
Nelson Mandela
“Let it never be said by future generations that indifference,
cynicism or selfishness made us fail to live up to the ideals of
humanism which the Nobel Peace Prize encapsulates."
Nelson Mandela was given the Nobel Peace prize on
10th December 1993.
