Message from the APS re superstuff
• APS congratulates David Thouless (University of Washington), Duncan
Haldane (Princeton University), and John Kosterlitz (Brown University) on
the 2016 Nobel Prize in Physics “for theoretical discoveries of topological
phase transitions and topological phases of matter.” Their work offers novel
insights into superconductors that allow electricity to flow without
resistance, superfluids that are the liquid analogue to electrical
superconductors, and countless quantum effects that can be produced on
the surfaces of materials, in thin films, or in chains of atoms and molecules.
• APS is proud to have recognized the three recipients as fellows and prize
winners. Kosterlitz and Thouless shared the APS Lars Onsager Prize in 2000,
and Haldane won the APS Oliver E. Buckley Condensed Matter Physics Prize
in 1993. [The Swedish Academy of Sciences assigned half of the prize
money (a bit less than 900 kE) to Kosterlitz and Haldane, and the other half
to Thouless. (La Repubblica)]
