Students in Middle School
• Grades 5 – 8, ages 10 - 15
• Wide range of social/emotional/physical/
academic development
• Wide range of interests and ability
• Enjoy books with high school characters
• Girls, especially, tend to enjoy “issue”
books
Young Adult Literature
• Targeted toward teenagers
• Most characters are high school age
• Many are issue novels: teen pregnancy,
drug use, homosexuality, dating violence,
abuse, rebellion, etc.
• Profanity is common.
So Why YA in Middle School?
• High appeal to students – they ask for them
by title!
• Students relate to the books
• Many have very positive, very hopeful
messages that speak directly to their lives
• From a formerly nonreader student:
“This book changed my life.”
