Mapping and Assessment of
Ecosystems and their Services
(MAES)
Update on MAES
in the marine domain
ENV.B.2 – Biodiversity
MAES marine workshop, 19 June
• Raising awareness of experts and stakeholders on
the importance of the mapping and assessment
of ecosystem services in the marine environment
• Highlighting links between MAES and MSFD,
marine Natura 2000
• Discussing availability and suitability of data from
different sources (EU env’t legislation, CFP/IMP,
RSCs, ICES, NGOs, …)
• Full report available on CIRCABC
Marine pilot
 Lead: JRC + FR; contributing also: PT, BE, EE,
UK, IUCN, Oceana, Coastwatch
 Marine “MAES matrix” and explanatory document
close to finalisation
 Matrix already used for assessment of subecosystem costal lagoons by PT (with input from
FP7 projects LAGOONS, ARCH)
